MCT Conducts Feasibility Study for U.K. Tidal Energy Project

Renewable Energy Today,  Feb 17, 2006

Marine Current Turbines (MCT) recently announced it is investigating the feasibility of building a tidal energy farm in waters 2 kilometers north-west of Lynmouth, off Foreland Point on the north Devon coast in England.

"The strong currents in the Bristol Channel offer one of the best resources for tidal energy in the U.K.," said MCT managing director Martin Wright. "The success of our SeaFlow device in the same stretch of water gives us every confidence that we can generate clean power for the local area on a commercial basis with minimal effect on the local and marine environment."

MCT said it expects to complete initial consultations with stakeholders next month, after which the company will begin its Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Once the EIA has been completed, MCT will determine whether or not the waters off Lynmouth are a suitable location for the 12-unit array and whether the necessary consents should be sought.
