KDDI ready to face price war with cheap handsets

Mobile Internet, The,  Sept, 2005

Japan-based KDDI is planning to start selling cheap 3G handsets acquired from Pantech of South Korea soon. KDDI is procuring handsets for its au services from an overseas supplier for the first time. Pantech is the seventh largest cellphone company in the world. It supplies handsets across 25 countries. These handsets provide basic 3G operations and a camera and are much cheaper than the local cellphones that range from $80 to $125.

The competition in the telecom sector in Japan has become very stiff. Hence, it will help KDDI to face the price war because of the low cost of its handsets.
