3. Southern Poverty Law Center. (1997). Starting small: Teaching tolerance in preschool and the early grades. Montgomery, AL: Author.

This book, accompanied by a videotape, presents excerpts from seven teachers in different parts of the United States as they actually work with students to combat various kinds of prejudices. Some of the issues profiled are racial and ethnic awareness, gender equity, fighting prejudices, and coping with loss. In addition to the narrative descriptions, the book includes research-based essays addressing specific themes and developmental aspects of teaching tolerance, as well as suggestions for incorporating the concepts in classroom practices.
