Massachusetts Medicaid has abandoned a proposal to restrict coverage of antipsychotics - Government Issues in Brief - Brief Article

Drug Cost Management Report,  July 11, 2003

* Massachusetts Medicaid has abandoned a proposal to restrict coverage of antipsychotics that was supposed to go into effect in June, according to the Boston Globe. Efforts by psychiatrists and patient advocacy groups persuaded the state that such a move would present an unacceptable risk to the mentally ill population.

Approximately 50,000 Massachusetts Medicaid patients are taking expensive new antipsychotics such as Zyprexa, at a cost of $150 million per year.
