Lymph nodes
Natural Health, Dec, 2001 by Nicole Bourassa
WHAT THEY ARE: Part of your immune system, your lymph nodes are bean-shaped masses that range in size from a pinhead to a grape. They're located in the jaw, neck, chest, armpits, pelvis, and groin.
WHAT THEY DO: Lymphatic fluid, known as lymph, travels through your lymphatic vessels, transporting oxygen and nutrients from your blood to tissue cells. Your lymph nodes filter this fluid and trap bacteria and toxic chemicals. They also produce the white blood cells called lymphocytes that act as immune fighters.
INTERESTING FACT: Some experts say that antiperspirants that use aluminum to block sweat cause the toxins that sweat would normally excrete to accumulate in your lymph nodes instead. You can prevent this by using aluminum-free deodorants.
