Safe sun for less lymphoma
Natural Health, July-August, 2004 by Rachel Dowd
Women who spent an average of 40 minutes outdoors each day had 60 percent less risk for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, according to researchers at the University of Sydney. Vitamin D, synthesized by modest amounts of exposure to the sun, is the most likely explanation for the protection. Also, a study in the American Journal of Epidemiology found that eating high amounts of saturated fat can boost your risk of this blood cancer by 90 percent, while a healthy diet reduces the danger.
Our advice? Enjoy brief walks in the early morning or late afternoon, and add fiber, fruits and vegetables to every meal. (If you're at risk for skin cancer, ask your doctor about vitamin D-enriched foods.)
