CARNIVORES BE WARNED
A decade-long study of mote than 90,000 women published in the Archives of Internal Medicine in 2006 found that women who ate more than 1 1/2 sewings of red meat each day were twice as likely to develop breast cancer. Researchers believe cattle growth hormones and heterocyclic amines (HCAs), cancer-causing compounds that form when meat is cooked, could be to blame.
When you eat red meat, choose organic, which is free of growth hormones. And Toast it in the oven instead of cooking it on the grill. Barbecuing produces more HCAs than Toasting, according to the National Cancer Institute.
