On the spots: does less-than-perfect skin have you dashing for cover? Banish those blemishes with these topical acne treatments

Natural Health,  June, 2005

IF YOU'RE AN ADULT with an acne problem, consider a natural solution. Salicylic acid, tea tree oil, and witch hazel are among the most effective acne fighters, according to Fran Cook-Bolden, M.D., director of the Skin Specialty Group in New York.

They're also affordable, easily accessible in over-the-counter formulations, and less likely than prescription medications to cause sensitivity and irritation. (To explore your other options for clearer skin, turn to "Staring Down Ache" on page 41.)

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid, derived from fruit, is known for its ability to trigger the shedding of dead skin cells that can cause congestion. "This de-clogging process is what helps re-establish a normal skin-cell shedding cycle," says Cook-Bolden.

Aveda Balancing Infusion ($18; aveda.com) keeps surface oils in check and soothes skin with pure plant essences like lemon, lime, and juniper berry.

Prescriptives Acne Defense Serum ($25; prescriptives.com) eases redness with oat extract and calming green tea as it clears out clogged pores.

Tea Tree Oil

Derived from the leaves of the native Australian Melaleuca alternifolia, tea tree oil has natural anti-bacterial qualities that make it a powerful enemy to ache. In addition, it's not as drying or irritating as many acne treatments, says Cook-Bolden.

Desert Essence Tea Tree Blemish Touch Stick ($9; wholefoods.com) has certified organic tea tree oil and a self-cleaning top to stop bacteria from spreading.

Earth Therapeutics Clari-T Acne Serum 5 ($7; earththerapeutics.com) is a complete zit-zapping formula with certified organic tea tree oil and anti-microbial benzoyl peroxide. It comes with an extracting tool to help draw out blackheads.

Witch Hazel

Witch hazel, a botanical derived from a shrub native to North America, has long been used in folk medicine to soothe skin. It's rich in tannins and volatile oils, which are natural astringents. "Because of its antiseptic capabilities, it tones the skin and blood vessels and draws out clogged pores," says Cook-Bolden.

Clarins Minimizing Blemish Cream ($19; gloss.com) is a tinted formula with witch hazel, wintergreen, and orris, all natural astringents that help purify pores.

Kiss My Face Break Out Acne Gel ($16; kissmyface.com), an organic blend of witch hazel and tea tree oil, contains aloe vera to reduce redness and irritation.
