Stuck at a fast-food joint on the highway? Be quick, but eat smart

Natural Health,  June, 2005  by Elizabeth Barker

If your travels lead you to an organic-free zone, don't ditch your healthy habits at the drive-through window. With the help of Montclair, N.J.-based dietitian Dina Aronson, R.D., we found the best bites at three major fast-food chains.

Burger King BK Veggie Burger

Key ingredients Veggie burger patty (includes mushrooms, onions, carrots, black olives, brown rice, and rolled oats), lettuce, tomato.

Good-for-you quotient "It's a high-protein vegetarian sandwich with 7 grams of fiber and 20 percent of your daily iron needs," says Aronson.

For a healthier makeover Hold the mayo, and double up on lettuce and tomato.

Calorie/fat content 420 calories, 16 fat grams (without mayonnaise).

Wendy's Mandarin Chicken Salad

Key ingredients Spring lettuce, mandarin oranges, diced chicken, roasted almonds, sesame dressing.

Good-for-you quotient "Almonds have been shown to fight heart disease," says Aronson.

For a healthier makeover Skip the crispy noodles and use only half the dressing. "Sesame is very flavorful, so a little will go a long way," says Aronson.

Calorie/fat content 425 calories, 22.5 fat grams (with a half-serving of dressing).

Taco Bell Bean Burrito, Fresco Style

Key ingredients Beans and fiesta salsa (diced tomatoes, onions, cilantro).

Good-for-you quotient "Beans are high in soluble fiber, which protects against heart disease by lowering cholesterol," says Aronson. "They're also high in protein, iron, and zinc."

For a healthier makeover Double up on the salsa to get more cilantro. "Some people swear by cilantro as a digestive aid," says Aronson.

Calorie/fat content 350 calories, 8 fat grams.
