Go ahead: treat yourself: when was the last time you did something special for yourself? If you can't remember, then you're long overdue - What's on My Mind
Natural Health, August, 2003 by Rachel Streit
RECENTLY I GAVE MYSELF the most wonderful gift: a week of sailing in the Caribbean with family and friends. It took a long time to save the money for the trip, but it was worth every penny. The British Virgin Islands are one of the most beautiful, serene places in the world. And I have never been so relaxed as I was those seven days.
Granted, that was quite an extravagance (and one I may never be able to repeat). But there are many ways you can indulge yourself that won't break the bank. For inspiration, consider these ideas:
1. Fill your House with Flowers. Studies have shown, and personal experience supports the idea, that flowers provide an emotional lift. You don't need to spend a fortune to spread flowers throughout your house. Harvest wildflowers or buy one bouquet and split it up, putting a flower or two in several different bud vases.
2. Rent a Laugh. My favorite movie is Caddy Shack. (I know it's lowbrow humor, but every time I watch it, I laugh and laugh.) Tonight give yourself a break from emotionally charged news broadcasts and mind-numbing sitcoms. Instead, rent something you know will put a smile on your face.
3. Grocery Shop with Abandon. After a tough day at work this week, I stopped by my local natural food store and filled my basket with anything and everything that caught my eye. I bought bright blueberries and raspberries, a rich goat cheese, gorgeous artichokes, and a perfectly ripe avocado. I didn't allow my rational mind, which would have said "That has too much fat" or "Those are too expensive," to censor my selections. And all week I had delicious food that I looked forward to preparing and eating. Next time you have to go to the grocery store, let your senses be your guide.
To learn how to find lasting bliss, be sure to read senior editor Erin O'Donnell's piece "How to Find True Happiness," on page 58 of this issue. O'Donnell describes six easy-to-adopt habits that researchers agree can bring you real satisfaction and deep contentment.
Wishing you good health,
