The little spa getaway

Natural Health,  May, 2006  by Elizabeth Barker

ANYONE WHO'S EVER SLIPPED AWAY TO A DAY SPA knows just how quickly an hour or two can fly by. If there's no room on your calendar--or in your bank account--for an extended spa stay, consider another option: Between the 50-minute body wrap and the weeklong excursion lies the mini-getaway, a midsize spa package that can rejuvenate your body and mind in one to four euphoric days.

That's just enough time to reaffirm your commitment to your own well-being. "For many people, spas aren't just pampering--they're a requisite to staying healthy," says Lynne Walker McNees, president of the International Spa Association. "A spa mini-getaway gives people that additional time they need to relax and revitalize."

To find your ideal itinerary, first determine what you want to take away from the experience. "There are no bad spa experiences, just bad matches," notes McNees. "If you're looking for pampering, you don't want to end up at a spa that focuses on hardcore fitness."

FOR LONGER-LASTING BENEFITS, LOOK FOR destinations that empower you to make health-enriching lifestyle changes. "We ensure that even in a quick getaway, our guests are exposed to education--a lecture, a class, or a cooking demo--so they can take their spa experience home," says Cathy S. Cluff, managing director for The Oaks at Ojai in California.

To illustrate, we've rounded up some quintessential quick retreats for nurturing your yoga practice, streamlining your fitness plan, learning how to eat healthier, or just blissing out with a barrage of tension-melting beauty treatments.

THE LAMAR EVERYDAY SPA

Scottsdale, Arizona; thelamar.com

At Lamar's two-day Yoga Journey Retreats, spa-goers of all fitness levels can stretch and strengthen with two days of yoga and hiking ($2B5 per person). Featuring instructors from StudiYo of Scottsdale, day one begins with a three-hour session blending hatha yoga, restorative yoga, and deep stretching. After class, guests can soak in the whirlpool, sweat in the steam room or sauna, or select a gotta-try-it treatment from the spa menu, which includes the Quenching Ginseng and Pearl Hydrating Mask ($100), Energizing Moor Mud Cocoon ($90), and Sunset Hot Rock Massage ($100). Day two is devoted to hiking up Camelback Mountain, where retreat members can power-walk the Greenbelt Path or seek adventure with a rock-climbing expedition. Since Lamar doen't offer overnight accommodations, the spa connects guests with special room rates at resorts within walking distance.

LAKE AUSTIN SPA RESORT

Austin, Texas; lakeaustin.com

The lineup of "discovery programs" at Lake Austin lends this spa the adventurous spirit of a grownup summer camp. As part of a three-night package (starting at $1,630 per person, based on double occupancy), you can dabble in classes on cooking, watercolor painting, or stargazing. Of course, you can sign up for courses like stress relief, transforming rituals, and aromatherapy, too. The package gives you unlimited access to dozens of yoga, Pilates, tai chi, cardio training, and flexibility classes; consider adding treatments like the Wonderful Wasabi & Green Tea Facial ($115) or the Eucalyptus Experience (a body scrub, Vichy shower, steam, gel application, and wrap; $140).

NEW AGE HEALTH SPA

Neversink, New York; newagehealthspa.com

Twice a month, specialty yoga weekends at New Age focus on a particular practice or health goal. For example, a Restorative Yoga program shows you how to heal the effects of chronic stress, while the Fasting Yoga event guides you through a juice detox. Other themes include smoking cessation, power yoga, yoga as healing, and yoga for healthy aging. Each weekend offers five yoga classes (rooms start at $204 per person per night, based on double occupancy, classes included), leaving guests time for optional workshops on feng shui, Ayurveda, or holistic nutrition. You can also schedule one-on-one consultations, such as private Pilates workouts, guided hikes, acupuncture sessions, and even tarot card readings. At the spa, therapists merge healing and indulgence in the Detoxifying Mud Wrap ($100), Aromatherapy Massage ($105), and Hydro Colon Therapy ($80).

THE OAKS AT OJAI

Ojai, California; oaksspa.com

If you're looking to launch a weight-loss plan, a weekend trip to The Oaks will provide invaluable inspiration, techniques, and tools. A three-day getaway (with rates starting at $175 per person per night, based on double occupancy) includes three daily salt- and sugar-free meals and a choice of 16 fitness activities, such as qi gong, belly dancing, and strength training. Each visit kicks off with an orientation where guests may select the most suitable classes and consultations. The latter include eating and fitness counseling ($80 per hour), body-composition analysis ($30 per half-hour), and personal wellness training ($60 per hour). Spa services are a la carte as well, and feature luscious items like the Ojai Olive Oil Body Souffle ($110) and the Lemongrass Lavender Pedispa Pedicure ($65).
