How to feel rich in a tough economy: a recession can be scary. But it can also be a time when you rediscover what's truly important to you - Mind, Body, Spirit - Brief Article
Natural Health, July, 2003
TIGHTENING YOUR PURSE STRINGS may not seem like fun, but it can help you appreciate life in ways money can't, says James Gordon, M.D., director of the Center for Mind-Body Medicine in Washington, D.C. The next time you feel the urge to splurge, try the following:
Create a New Social Scene. Instead of meeting up with friends at pricey restaurants and movie theaters, invite them over for dinner or to watch the latest video or DVD release. Rotate hosting duties among your friends. You'll save money and get to know your friends better.
Spend Time, Not Money. Replace time spent shopping for frivolous items with volunteer work. Chances are you'll feel more satisfied helping others than buying a new swimsuit.
Vacation at Home. Plan fun activities to do at home instead of taking an expensive trip. You'll probably find that you feel more rested after a relaxing week at home than if you had traveled.
