Naturally, healthy - Director's Letter

Natural Health,  April, 2004  by Barb Harris

Why would a health magazine focus on working out? It's simple biology: Your body requires physical activity; in fact, you can't be healthy without it. Yet more than half of all American adults get little or no exercise, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The result is an epidemic of stress, obesity, diabetes and other disabilities and diseases linked to inactivity. (See "Preventing Diabetes" on page 46 for some startling statistics--and how to avoid becoming one.)

Once you find an activity you like, it's a joy to move your body; it's also an effective method for managing weight and a great way to relieve stress. So NATURAL HEALTH will continue to explore diverse exercise options, such as yoga, t'ai chi, dance, weight training and, in this issue, Pilates ("From Reformer to Floor," page 40). In "100 Things You Need to Know About Walking, Running, Hiking and Trekking" (page 64), you'll find gear, fashion and fitness tips to make these activities as pleasurable and rewarding as possible.

Of course, good health requires more than movement. Cultures converge with delicious results in "The Spices of Life" (page 74), a healthful reinterpretation of Indian classics that will nourish your body and soul. The remarkable rooftop gardens and meadows in "Living Roofs" (page 89) bring beauty and cool, fresh air to urban dwellers. And don't forget the physical impact of your emotions. For help dealing with hostility, which can literally make you sick, read "Anger Therapy" (page 97).

If your body should fall out of balance, it's important to know the right conventional and alternative treatments to choose. "The New Pharmacy" (page 84) integrates the full range of pharmaceutical medicine with natural products, herbal remedies and free advice from naturopaths and nutritionists.

Finally, let "Sail Away" (page 14) motivate you to have an adventure, whether it's traveling, going back to school or wearing something colorful and bold. There's nothing more natural you can do for your health than to love your life and be inspired to stretch and grow and experience new things!
