Breast Cancer: Beyond Convention. - book review

Natural Health,  May-June, 2002  by Stacy Eaton

EDITED BY MARY TAGLIAFERRI, DEBU TRIPATHY, AND ISAAC COHEN POCKET BOOKS; $26

THIS ENCYCLOPEDIC BOOK IS A SOLID starting point for anyone interested in healing breast cancer with complementary and alternative therapies. I don't know of any other book that offers not only dietary advice and meditation tips, but also in-depth discussions of traditional Chinese medicine juxtaposed with soy recipes and survivor stories (don't attempt to read Michael Lerner's story without a box of tissues close by). But as distinguished as the contributors are--they include Susan Love, Jon Kabat Zinn, Ellen Levine, and Dean Ornish--the book doesn't quite live up to its promise as an invaluable resource. The scientific analyses are sometimes confusing--one writer will state that there are no reliable data about certain treatments, while another will exhibit data that "prove" this same therapy is effective. Also disconcerting is the way the editors state their equal commitment to conventional medicine over and over again. Yet this is the first book I would turn to for information on unconventional cancer therapies from trusted sources.
