More Fluoride, More Cavities

Natural Health,  April, 1999  by Katherine Gallia,  Susanne Althoff,  Melissa Nachatelo

CHILDREN WHO LIVE IN COMMUNITIES with fluoridated public water may have more cavities and tooth discoloration than children who drink unfluoridated water, according to a recent study by the New York State Department of Health.

Officials compared the dental records of children from Newburgh, N.Y.--where water has been fluoridated for more than 50 years--with the records of kids from the never-fluoridated city of Kingston, N.Y. And despite the researchers' claims that fluoride is an effective means of cavity prevention, their own data show that the Newburgh children actually have slightly more cavities, and significantly more dental fluorosis (discoloration caused by fluoride), than those from neighboring Kingston.
