The Posture Prescription - Book Review

Natural Health,  March, 2003  by Stephanie Chelf

BY ARTHUR WHITE, M.D., AND KATE KELLY; THREE RIVERS PRESS; $13

White, a San Francisco-based surgeon, promises to ease your back and joint pain and strengthen your muscles with simple, easy exercises that eliminate the need for surgery and even for workout sessions at the gym. The key to his program is to perform these exercises during daily activities--stretching before jumping out of bed, for example. Some of his recommended movements, like standing up straight, seem so basic that it's hard to see how they could really help. And because he initially promises that his simple exercises are all you need to ease back pain, it's disappointing to find out later that you'll also need to add an endurance program (walking, swimming, or biking). Still, the basic movements are easy to integrate into an ordinary day and offer a good start toward pain relief.
