Power up

Natural Health,  Oct, 2004

Sports drinks that contain carbohydrates and protein can maximize endurance and minimize muscle damage, according to a new James Madison University study. Cyclists drank Gatorade (7.3 percent carbs) or Accelerade (same carb count plus 1.8 percent protein), then rode to exhaustion; the latter group rode 29 percent longer.

"Protein may enhance the uptake of the carbs, or the protein itself might be utilized as a fuel to prolong exercise," says lead author Mike Saunders, Ph.D.
