Revisiting Paul's Doctrine of Justification: A Challenge to the New Perspective

Currents in Theology and Mission,  Oct, 2004  by Edgar Krentz

Revisiting Paul's Doctrine of Justification: A Challenge to the New Perspective (InterVarsity Press, $13) gives us Peter Stuhlmacher's three lectures on Paul's doctrine of justification, supplemented by Donald A. Hagner's essay "Paul and Judaism: Testing the New Perspective." Stuhlmacher rejects the proposal by E.

P. Sanders and James Dunn that justification is not central to Pauline thought but only appears in argumentation against Jews and Jewish Christians by examining Paul's letters on justification, while Hagner in more systematic fashion describes the basic presupposition and arguments for the proposal in order to modify or reject them. It is a good read that deserves careful attention by parish pastors. EK
