The Historical Jesus Goes to Church

Currents in Theology and Mission,  August, 2007  by Edgar Krentz

The Jesus Seminar continues its curious way. In The Historical Jesus Goes to Church (Pole-bridge, $18) eight writers describe how the use of the Jesus Seminar's results raise questions, provoke discussion, critique the tradition, call the reliability of the New Testament into question, and try to make the case that this benefits the church and its message greatly.

Provocative, challenging, aggravating, and insightful, it will challenge clergy to rethink their understanding of Jesus as these essays claim that the modern world challenges the classical beliefs about Jesus. The challenge is both relevant and good; their solution to meeting this challenge satisfies less. Still, pastors need to be informed about their challenge, since they hope to export their theology to local parishes. EK
