Saskatchewan opens access to paternal adoption records

Community Action,  Jan 24, 2005

REGINA -- New Saskatchewan legislation enables birth fathers to be included in the planning for their child in adoption proceedings and will increase flexibility for accessing birth father information in adoptions that have been finalized in Saskatchewan dating back to 1922. These adoptions are final and cannot be reversed.

"The new approach gives children the ability to obtain information about their maternal and paternal ancestry and information. Ensuring birth parents are treated equitably in adoption law is absolutely the right thing to do," Community Resources and Employment Minister Joanne Crofford said.

Under the new legislation, birth fathers will now have greater opportunities to be involved in adoption planning. Courts will be able to assess circumstances where birth father involvement may not be appropriate. 306-787-0531
