Say hello to seasonale - Extra Health - oral contraceptive - Brief Article
Muscle & Fitness/Hers, Oct-Nov, 2002 by Carrie Curtis
If you currently use an oral contraceptive, do you dread the tiny sugar pills that send you into menstrual hell (or at least a bit of unpleasantness) seven out of every 28 days? You could soon be saying goodbye to cramps; bloating, heavy bleeding and headaches with a new oral contraceptive called Seasonale, designed to eliminate three out of every four periods. Fresh out of Phase III clinical trials and headed for FDA approval, Seasonale could be prescribed by doctors as early as next year.
If approved for the U.S. market, Seasonale would present a radical departure from the way most women think about their periods. This extended oral contraceptive is taken for 84 consecutive days; followed by seven days of placebo pills; women taking Seasonale would have a period only four times a year down from the regular pill 'users' 13 times a year. Added benefits of Seasonale may include a decrease in anemia-due to less bleeding! and overall improved quality of life due to fewer mood swings and a decrease in many other menstrual side effects.
