Say VOC to sports - Extra Training - youth sports participation aids life long health - Brief Article
Muscle & Fitness/Hers, August-Sept, 2002
They may be made of sugar and spice, but little girls who grow up being active in sports have a better chance of staying healthy and slim, say researchers from the University of Memphis, Tennessee. They calculated body mass index (weight relative to height) for 486 women ages 18-39, who then filled out a survey assessing past sports participation and current physical activity level.
Statistical analyses indicated that a history of youth sports participation predicted a lower body mass index, and higher total and sports activity levels in later life. "Girls' participation in sports may lay the foundation for adult health and health behaviors, and (youth) sports participation could be an important component of obesity-prevention programs," the researchers concluded in the journal Preventive Medicine.
