Here's the newest dish - Girl Talk - Letter to the Editor

Muscle & Fitness/Hers,  August-Sept, 2002

switching it up

In response to Joe and Betty Weider's advice in their June 2002 issue editorial, "The Key Is Change," I plan on trying hatha yoga. My first class starts next Saturday. I've always been interested in yoga, but never followed up on it. I'm really looking forward to the new challenge and learning a possible life-changing form of exercise.

I also want to tell you how thrilled I am to find out that you're now going to publish nine times a year. M&F HERS is the only magazine I read from front to back (and I subscribe to many). I'm absorbed by each and every article, and look forward to receiving even more issues in the coming year!

One last comment I'd like to make is about the article "Fast Forward," June 2002: Due to bad knees, I can't do a lot of high-impact cardio exercises. I love to walk, however, and found this article excellent. I plan on trying racewalking this summer; enjoying the low-impact workout as well as the warm weather.

Bumpy beware

Thank you for the informative article on cellulite in your June issue ["The Naked Truth," June 2002]. I especially appreciated the warning about endermology. I was one of the unfortunate women who actually tried endermology and ended up with a serious injury because of it. The spa performing the procedure was neither licensed nor adequately trained to do so, and I suffered severe tissue damage on my glutes anti thighs after just one treatment. I filed a complaint with the FDA, but it's too late to undo the damage. Believe me when I say if given the chance to do it over again, I'd rather live with my cellulite than ever put myself through something like that again.

hungry & helpless?

I enjoy this magazine so much that I was shocked when I looked at this month's pullout ["Look Great in Eight," June 2002] and was unable to locate any of the recipes for the meal plans. I'm looking for assistance in my weight loss and these meals would have helped -- too bad I'm unable to use most of them.

Many readers called, wrote or e-mailed requests for recipes for our "Look Great in Eight" menu planner (June 2002). While the concept of the 56 dinner menus and cooking how-to's wasn't to provide new recipes but to suggest recipes from your own recipe files and cookbooks, we do have some tasty recipes to share. Some fit the menu plan exactly, while others need some easy adjustments (such as using turkey instead of chicken, or beaus instead of corn). Just log on to our website at www.muscle-fitnesshers.com for many recipes to get you started.

Meanwhile, try adapting some of your favorite recipes using our basic dinner plan and light cooking how-to's from the poster and pages 74-75 of the June issue. Also try the great new recipes we feature each issue, notably in "Lighter & Leaner" and those in "Too Hot to Cook" in the July issue.

programmed & ready for action

I'd never bought M&F HERS before, but was intrigued by the eight-week bodyfat blast program in June's issue. I must say, I'm very impressed with your publication. I love the pull-out chart that's organized into weeks with objectives for each day It's very motivating, as well as providing useful information. A lot of magazines publish programs, but never this comprehensive. Please do more of these in the future -- they're really great for organizing cardio and weight-training goals.

a future in football?

Thank you for writing the article "Gridiron Girls" [June 2002]! Because of you, I'm enrolled to try out at the San Diego Sunfire training camp, which is one of the women's teams in the same league as the California Quake. You have no idea how grateful I am!

don't forget the "fitness"

Just a comment to Ada from Chicago's note ["Girl Talk," June 2002] -- I switched to M&F HERS specifically because I do think the magazine stays away from excessive "girlie" news (hair, fashions, makeup, etc.), but I don't think it should focus solely on weightlifting. It's called Muscle and Fitness, and so should encompass all "fitness-enhancing activities," including but not limited to weightlifting.

Thanks for being my "fitness buddy," M&F HERS; you've been at every workout since I became a subscriber and will continue to be my biggest motivator!

real role model

I love your magazine! I just read the article on Dr Michele Olson ["Real Women: Class Act," June 2002] and think she's absolutely fantastic and inspirational! I'd like to see more articles like these in your magazine -- about real people who are role models. You should use her not only as an authority on fitness and exercise but as a fitness model, too!
