Are eating disorders genetic - Extra Health - Brief Article

Muscle & Fitness/Hers,  July, 2002

If two or more people in your family suffer or have suffered from anorexia nervosa, other family members could be at risk of developing it, too, suggests an international collaborative team of researchers in the American Journal of Human Genetics.

They're the first to identify a region on chromosome 1 that may contain genes that make an individual susceptible to developing anorexia nervosa. The findings add to a growing body of research supporting the belief that genetic transmission -- in addition to psychosocial factors -- contributes to a person's vulnerability to develop anorexia nervosa. Studies are ongoing; for more information, go to anbn.org.
