New laser technology offers breakthrough for pain relief and healing of many chronic conditions

Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients,  Oct, 2006

Ewa Zaborowski is a physical therapist in Marin County, California, who has been specializing in the treatment of chronic pain and sports injuries for over twenty years. Now, she has a powerful new tool at her side. Ms. Zaborowski is the first physical therapist in Marin County to use the Erchonia Low Level Laser in her practice. Approved by the FDA, cold laser therapy stimulates the healing of tissue in injuries and provides remarkable pain relief. More than 100 double-blind studies have confirmed the clinical effects of this laser therapy. And over 2500 research reports have been published touting the clinical value of this treatment method and its pain relief benefits.

"I have seen firsthand how low-level laser therapy has helped patients to heal faster and improve their quality of life," says Ms. Zaborowski. She goes on to say, "The laser has a wide range of applications in physical therapy, including the treatment of back pain, carpel tunnel syndrome, fibromyalgia, rotator cuff injury, repetitive stress syndrome, and the healing of open wounds."

The laser works at a cellular level by increasing the flow of blood to the injured area. This both provides pain relief and speeds up healing time--often decreasing the cost and time necessary for physical therapy treatment. Although treatment times can vary depending on the protocols for a particular injury, most sessions are in increments of 15 minutes with fees running on average from $22 to $40 per visit. The number of treatments required also varies, depending on the severity of the injury and level of pain, but is often less than traditional physical therapy.

"Traditional physical therapy is still very necessary," says Ewa. "The laser simply gives me another tool I can use to aid in a patient's healing. Combining the laser with the other disciplines I utilize, including Feldenkrais, Pilates, and traditional physical therapy, has taken my ability to treat my patients' pain and injury to a whole new level."

Ewa, who holds a Masters degree in Physical Therapy, is a registered member of the Board of Physical Therapy in the State of California and is currently obtaining her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Boston University.
