What's your IQ when it comes to knowledge about your teeth? Take the True or False "Wisdom" Tooth Test:
1. Gum disease can affect other health issues in your body.
2. Losing teeth is a natural part of growing old.
3. Bleeding gums, especially after flossing, is normal.
4. Periodontal disease is an infectious and contagious disease.
5. Only people who don't brush their teeth get periodontal disease.
6. Only people over 50 years old get periodontal disease.
7. Periodontal disease is the number one cause of tooth loss--even over cavities.
Answers:
1. True -- Periodontal disease can enter the bloodstream and create new infections. Research is showing that it is linked to cardiovascular disease, stroke, low birth weight babies, osteoporosis, and diabetes.
2. False -- With diligent home care and regular 3-6 month cleanings at the dentist, your teeth will last your entire life.
3. False -- Gums should not bleed after flossing. Bleeding gums is a sign of periodontal disease. Other signs are persistent bad breath; red, swollen or tender gums; pus between the teeth and gums (leaving bad breath); gums that have pulled away from the teeth; loose or separating teeth; a change in the way the teeth fit together.
4. True -- Periodontal disease is an infectious and contagious disease. The bacterial infection is passed through the saliva. If a member of the family has periodontal disease, all members should be evaluated.
5. False -- About 30% of the population are genetically susceptible to periodontal disease and about six times more likely to have gum disease.
6. False -- While periodontal disease increases with age, about 66% of young adults have some form of periodontal disease.
7. True!!! In addition, periodontal disease is the most prevalent disease on the planet.
