Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, June, 2002
1) Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum's double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study recently published in the Journal of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (vol 8, number 2); and
2) Acceptance of this treatment as standard of practice in the Journal of the American Academy of Pain Management, the main publication of chronic pain specialists in the country. An editorial in the April 2002 issue of the Journal of the AAPM accepts his treatment as "standard of practice" in treating FMS and CFS.
Why is this important? Of the 75 million Americans who have chronic pain, only 1 in 4 receive proper treatment, according to the American Pain Foundation. Finally, there is a recognized standard of practice for physicians to diagnose and treat patients. Eighty percent of people with FMS and CFS are women. Dr. Teitelbaum is a tireless crusader for an an integrated and holistic treatment to these illnesses.
What causes it? There are many problems or triggers that can create CFS/Fibromyalgia syndromes. These include a myriad of infections, anything that disrupts sleep (including mild injuries and nutritional and hormonal deficiencies that cause muscle pain), childbirth, etc. All of these can cause suppression of the hypothalamus which controls sleep, most hormonal systems, and the autonomic system, which regulates blood flow and pressure.
How can one get healthy again? Up to 90% of chronic pain sufferers will improve if doctors simply treat problems in four broad areas of health: poor sleep, persistent infections, hormonal deficiencies and poor nutrition.
Who is Dr. Teitelbaum? Dr. Teitelbaum is a board-certified internist and director of the Annapolis Research Center for Effective CFS/Fibromyalgia Therapies. Having suffered with and overcome these illnesses in 1975, he spent the next 25 years creating, researching, and teaching about effective therapies. He treats patients from all over the world in his office in Annapolis, Maryland and lectures internationally. He is also the author of the best-selling book From Fatigued to Fantastic! (Penguin Putnam, completely revised and updated August 2001). His web site (www.endfatigue.com) contains a sophisticated computer program which can analyze and create a complete medical record of a patient's case and determine the treatments they need to get well.
