Townsend Letter for Doctors and Patients, August, 2001 by Jule Klotter
Holistic medicine refers to seeing each person as an entity that comprises interaction between body, mind, and spirit. While research in psychoneuroimmunology and mind-body interaction is blooming, medical practitioners are often less comfortable with the spiritual aspect. In Fall 1999, Bastyr University initiated its Spirituality, Health and Medicine Professional Certificate Program for health care practitioners, counselors, and ministers. This nonsectarian program is designed to encourage personal and professional exploration of spiritual traditions, prayer, the power of belief and their effect on health.
The class meets one weekend a month from October through June of the following year at Bastyr University in Kenmore, Washington (near Seattle). In addition to the monthly weekend of class time, participants are expected to spend eight to ten hours per week reading and about six hours each week in practicum service, applying the skills and concepts that they learn.
