Moses Asch and Marian Distler founded Folkways in 1948 to document music, spoken word, and sounds from around the world. In 1988, the Smithsonian acquired the Folkways archives from Asch's estate. All 2,168 titles are catalogued in A World of Sound, available as made-to-order CDs and cassettes. The Smithsonian Folkways Catalogue offers the 200 (and counting) titles added since 1988.
