Brazilian Carnaval 2005. Our friends Patricia and Gilberto Leão of Brazilian Nites Productions will be bringing once again the dynamic rhythms and non-stop entertainment of Brazilian Carnaval. This year's event will take place on Saturday, February 12, 2005 at the landmark Queen Mary in Long Beach. The celebration follows one week after Brazil's own carnavals in Rio de Janeiro and Bahia, marking the beginning of the Lenten season. Headlining the event will be the legendary Jorge Ben Jor. The author of the classic Mais Que Nada (recorded over 40 years ago), Jorge Ben Jor may be the most recognized Brazilian composer/performer outside of Brazil after Tom Jobim. In Brazil, artists of every style have recorded his songs, interpreted as funk, bossa nova, samba, forró, heavy metal and rap. His songs have also become standards on the mobile sound systems that parade throughout the carnaval (Trios Elétricos). Also performing will be local Brazilian favorite Katia Moraes & Pure Samba, M.I.L.A. Samba School, and the stunning Oyá Brazil Samba Show Dancers. Come and experience the excitement of the largest carnaval party in southern California. Authentic Brazilian cuisine, crafts, clothing and a variety of Brazilian items will be available for purchase. The event's official Master of Ceremonies will be radio host Sergio Mielniczenko from the Global Village of KPFK 90.7. FM and The Brazilian Hour of KXLU 88.9 FM. The J. Paul Getty Museum of Los Angeles recently announced their acquisition of Bartolomé Esteban Murillo's "The Vision of Saint Francis of Paola," oil on canvas from about 1670. Made during Spain's Golden Age of Painting, this acquisition strengthens the Museum's collection of Spanish paintings, including two important earlier works from that era: El Greco's "Christ on the Cross" and Jusepe de Ribera's "A Philosopher." The Getty Museum is open Tuesday through Sunday and admission is always free. For more information call (310) 440-7300 or visit www.getty.edu.
In the studios, putting the final touches on their new productions are Johnny Polanco & Conjunto Amistad, Spellbound, Bayaló, and Chalo y Su Aché. Enjoying new releases are Poncho Sánchez (DVD Poncho At Montreux), The Banda Brothers Band, Sonolux, Orquesta Melaza, and Alex Acuña.
