Industry: Email Alert RSS FeedAORN. President convenes first meeting of 2005-2006 board
AORN Journal, July, 2005 by Charlotte Guglielmi
The AORN Board of Directors met in New Orleans on Friday, April 8, 2005. All Board members were present, as were members of the executive staff. The Board celebrated a successful Congress, agreeing that attendees and exhibitors alike seemed to have had a great week. Members' response to the work of the House of Delegates related to practice issues was overwhelmingly positive and expressed members' desire to drive perioperative nursing practice. The Board commends Congress attendees on the level of preparation and knowledge about the issues that they exhibited in the Forums and the House.
APPOINTMENTS
President Sharon McNamara, RN, MS, CNOR, reviewed her goals for the coming year, and new Board members were assigned mentors. The orientation included Board committee appointments, as well as the announcement of liaison assignments to AORN committees, task forces, specialty assemblies, and state councils. President McNamara appointed Ramona Conner, RN, MSN, CNOR, perioperative nursing specialist, AORN Center for Nursing Practice, to represent AORN at Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation meetings, and past President William J. Duffy, RN, BSN, MJ, CNOR, will represent AORN on the American College of Surgeons' committee on perioperative care.
CONTINUING PROGRAMS
President McNamara informed the Board that in keeping with the practice that was established last year, she will continue to convene pre-Board meeting conference calls approximately 10 days before each Board meeting. These calls provide a direct connection between individuals making motions to the Board and the Board members. Individuals will be able to articulate the rationale for the motion personally and make sure that the intent of the motion is clear to the Board. President McNamara also announced the continuation of the Board chapter visit program. She encouraged Board members to visit local hospitals and meet with managers and directors, as well as visiting AORN industry partners whenever possible as part of the program.
NEW BUSINESS
The Board approved a motion to purchase a silver sponsorship in the Sigma Theta Tau brick paver campaign. This campaign commemorates gifts or pledges of $500 or more by placing an engraved brick paver in the walkway outside of Sigma Theta Tau headquarters in Indianapolis. Sigma Theta Tau, the honor society of nursing, helps AORN achieve its mission through the donation of research grants to the AORN Foundation and other endeavors that promote professional nursing and scholarship. President McNamara assigned Ric Cuming, RN, MSN, CNOR, CPAN, to work with Executive Director Tom Cooper, CAE, on this endeavor.
There is ongoing debate within the International Federation of Perioperative Nurses (IFPN) regarding a proposed bylaws change that would relax the current limitation of terms for elected officials. After discussion, the Board approved a motion that AORN support current IFPN bylaws related to term limits.
OTHER MEETINGS
The Board met for its annual strategic planning session, June 3 and 4, 2005, in Chicago. The members of the Specialty Assembly Futures Task Force were invited to join the Board for this meeting, which coincided with the opening of the new exhibit, "Nursing: Care for a Changing World," at the International Museum of Surgical Science in Chicago. This exhibit is dedicated to the memory of AORN past President Jean Reeder. Coverage of this meeting will be in a future issue of the AORN Journal.
The next meeting of the AORN Board of Directors will be July 13 to 15, 2005, at AORN Headquarters in Denver. Agenda items should be submitted to President McNamara at Headquarters, 2170 S Parker Rd, Suite 400, Denver, CO 80231-5711.
