What you can do to reduce miscarriage risk

While there's no way to know for sure what exactly causes a woman to miscarry, a new study published in the British Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology has identified 17 factors that may increase and decrease the risk Among the 11 factors identified as possibly increasing the risk of miscarriage are maternal age (over 35).

having a lOW prepregnancy weight, having a stressful job. consuming alcohol on a regular basis, taking more than a year to become pregnant, and having previously undergone infertility treatments. If you are not married to or living with your partner, have had an abortion. feel stressed or depressed most of the time. or if your baby's father is different from the father of your previous children, you may also have an increased risk. Factors that may decrease your risk of miscarriage include taking vitamins, eating a healthful diet, having had a live birth. suffering from nausea during the first trimester, feeling well enough for air travel or sex and maintaining better emotional well-being.
