Raising Vegan Children in a Non-Vegan World
Vegetarian Journal, Jan-Feb, 2004 by Reed Mangels
By Erin Pavlina
Erin Pavlina, the founder of VegFamily.com, has written Raising Vegan Children in a Non-Vegan World. This book provides lots of practical ideas for coping with situations, like finding out your child ate something non-vegan at daycare, field trips to the zoo, and selling (non-vegan) Girl Scout cookies. I liked the way she uses real stories from real parents to present ideas for raising vegan children.
About three dozen simple vegan recipes are included. Unfortunately, they do not include nutrient analyses. The section on feeding vegan children includes a number of small errors. For example, it states that spinach is a good source of calcium and that soymilk is fortified with iron. It also gives an incorrect recommendation for vitamin [B.sub.12] for breastfeeding women. But it does have sound ideas for coping with picky eaters and for meeting needs for some key nutrients.
Parents of vegan children will find a lot of helpful advice in Raising Vegan Children in a Non- Vegan World.
