The New Becoming Vegetarian: The Essential Guide to a Healthy Vegetarian Diet

Vegetarian Journal,  Jan-Feb, 2004  by Reed Mangels

By Vesanto Melina, MS, RD and Brenda Davis, RD

The original Becoming Vegetarian was published close to 10 years ago. Since then, there has been a huge amount of new research in the area of vegetarian nutrition. Fortunately, Vesanto Melina and Brenda Davis have completely revised and updated their book and published The New Becoming Vegetarian. This excellent and thorough text addresses all aspects of vegetarian nutrition, including key nutrients, essential fats, the life-cycle, and weight control. In addition, it provides a number of solutions for common social situations and includes 50 vegan recipes. The New Becoming Vegetarian can be helpful to both the new vegetarian who is trying to find out the basics of nutrition and the experienced vegetarian who has more detailed questions. It would even be a valuable addition to a nutrition professional's library. Melina and Davis have used tables and sidebars to highlight and clarify information. This book is a valuable resource, one that every vegetarian should read!

The New Becoming Vegeterian (ISBN 1-57067-144-3) is published by Healthy Living Publications. It is 374 pages and retail for $19.95. Look for it in bookstores. Reviewed by Reed Mangels, PhD, RD.
