NEW YORK'S SECOND LARGEST city, Buffalo sits on the international border between Canada and the United States, offering a wealth of attractions to its six million annual visitors. Known for its many magnificent buildings, Buffalo boasts five homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright and a parks system designed by renowned landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Buffalo City Hall, besides being an outstanding example of Art Deco, has an observation tower serving up fine views of the city and Lake Erie. Exhibits at Buffalo Naval & Military Park represent all branches of the Armed Forces. History buffs enjoy the Theodore Roosevelt Inaugural National Historic Site. The Buffalo Museum of Science presents natural history, while Albright-Knox Art Gallery is noted for its 20th century collection. More than 1,000 animals inhabit the country's third oldest zoo, Buffalo Zoological Gardens. Sports fans can choose from lacrosse, hockey, baseball, racing, and football (NFL Buffalo Bills). Music lovers head to the acoustically perfect Kleinhans Music Hall to hear the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra. Shea's Performing Arts Center is the place to enjoy live theater.
15 North of Buffalo thunders a natural wonder of the world, Niagara Falls. Take the Maid of the Mist boat tour to get up close and personal with the spectacular sight. On dry land in the city of Niagara Falls, visit the Aquarium of Niagara, a fun-filled research and educational facility; see daredevils' equipment and the history of Niagara Falls in wax at the Niagara Wax Museum of History. Of the fewer than 150 wooden carousels remaining in the world, one can be seen along with woodcarving demonstrations and other exhibits in Tonawanda at the Herschell Carousel Factory Museum. Point the wheels southeast to Orchard Park for a look at the Pedaling History Bicycle Museum, with its display of more than 300 rare and unique bicycles.
20 Heading northwest to the suburb of Lewiston, Artpark offers visual and performing arts. In Lockport, head to Lockport Locks/Canal Emporium and take a cruise on the Erie Canal and see five original locks. Venture south to Eden, which claims the only metal kazoo factory in the world. A large version of the instrument sits atop the roof of the Original American Kazoo Company, where visitors can see how kazoos are made and pore over a collection of wooden, silver, and gold kazoos. Southeast in East Aurora explore the Millard Fillmore House, the home of the 13th U.S. president. Family fun awaits to the east at New York State's largest amusement park, Six Flags Darien Lake.
35 Visit the Holland Land Office Museum in Batavia, a museum offering pioneer and Indian artifacts in the 1815 office building of the Holland Land Company, which acquired a tract of land in western New York. Take in a performance at Genesee Center for the Arts, or enjoy harness racing and video gaming machines at Batavia Downs. Tour the Jell-O Gallery in Leroy, birthplace of the famous gelatin dessert. In the Alabama area, enjoy the outdoors at Iroquois National Wildlife Refuge, New York's largest wildlife refuge. To the south, Dunkirk offers the Dunkirk Historical Lighthouse and Veterans Park Museum, with lighthouse keepers' rooms and exhibits relating to the various branches of service.
60 Head east to Rochester, known as the "World's Image Center." Visit the George Eastman House, with its fabulous collection of photography, films, and technology. The Memorial Art Gallery collection of some 10,000 objects, including works by Monet, Degas, Cezanne, and other greats, is one of the country's finest regional art museums. The 1860 Susan B. Anthony House was the suffragette's home and headquarters for her crusade and contains original furnishings and family heirlooms. Lucille Ball fans will want to head south to Jamestown and the Lucy-Desi Museum, which spotlights the screwball redhead, a Jamestown native, and her husband, Desi Amaz. Southwest of Buffalo is the lakeside village of Chautauqua, home of the Chautauqua Institution, a summer cultural learning vacation destination. Head northwest into Canada to Hamilton for shopping and dozens of attractions like the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and Hamilton Farmers' Market. Learn about the life and times of Sir Allan Napier MacNab--who was knighted by Queen Victoria--at Dundurn Castle.
The Finger Lakes region is one of America's largest wine regions, with more than 80 wineries offering tastings and tours. In the Finger Lakes town of Canandaigua, see the Granger Homestead & Carriage Museum, with its great collection of horse-drawn sleighs and coaches. One of America's Victorian- era beauties, Sonnenberg Gardens features nine formal gardens and a 40-room mansion gracing an estate overlooking Canandaigua Lake. Take a narrated tour around the Finger Lakes area on Captain Gray's Boat Tours or enjoy the elegance of paddlewheel steam-boating on the Canandaigua Lady.
