That's why Bobby and Barry Bonds are the most prolific father-son combination in baseball history. Combined, they have 985 home runs (through August), with Ken Griffey and Ken Griffey Jr. next at 633. The Bondses' 961 steals lead Maury and Bump Wills' 782. The Bondses are No. 2 behind Bob Boone and sons Aaron and Bret on the RBI list with 2,755.

"Bobby and Barry were very close in recent years," Davenport said. "This was very tough on Barry, on all of us to see such a strong man lose the battle. Bobby could play ball as well as anyone, but the drinking and smoking took their toll.

"That's what we did in those days. But even then, he was a great player. He never cut down on his Swing, and he was the same way on the golf course. He was a good outfielder with a good arm, and he could really run."
