New Poll: Trade Agreement with Central America Should Be Rejected

Trade representatives from the United States and six nations in Central America last year signed a trade agreement that evidently does not have the support of American voters.

Relax. The Central America Free Trade Agreement, or CAFTA, is not yet law. Congress must first sign off on the deal.

A recent poll commissioned by www.AmericansForFairTrade.org should give pause to anyone on Capitol Hill who thinks that CAFTA is a "slam dunk."

According to the survey, 50 percent of American voters say that they generally favor trade agreements, but only 32 percent are in favor of CAFTA. The poll further shows that Americans are painfully aware that this accord is a warmed-over version of its predecessor, the North American Free Trade Agreement, or NAFTA.
