Samsung to enable Sprint's WiBro testing

An agreement has been formed for the provision of testing equipment for wireless broadband services, between mobile handset manufacturer Samsung Electronics Co and Sprint Nextel Corp.

Samsung is to provide mobile handsets and networking systems to enable Sprint to test wireless broadband services, known also as WiBro. WiBro, a wireless high-speed data communication service, enables users of mobile devices such as mobile phones and PDAs to access broadband Internet.

WiBro operates at speeds up to 120km per hour and industry analysts expect the market to be worth around USD1.4bn by 2007. Samsung and Sprint have agreed to work together on developing WiBro technologies and last month Samsung revealed it was meeting with overseas providers regarding the provision of testing equipment.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
