Cable World, August 29, 2005
Still haven't figured out what you're doing this Labor Day weekend? We called the heads of some of the more outdoorsy cable networks to see what they have cooked up. Perhaps you'll get some inspiration from them--although you may not want to follow Laureen Ong's example. --Simon Applebaum
Ed Hardy, president, Great American Country:
"Since we relocated recently to Nashville perhaps we'll take advantage of the long holiday weekend to hit the road and start exploring."
Stan Hitchcock, president, BlueHighways TV:
"This year our 18-year-old son Scott and his contemporary Christian band Touch are having their first CD released and a concert at the Gibson Showcase in Nashville. My wife and I will be in the front row cheering him on."
John McDonald, GM, Fine Living:
"This holiday is all about a simple trip to the beach with friends. That probably translates to a little too much sun, a little too much food and just enough great memories to carry us through to Thanksgiving."
Laureen Ong, president, National Geographic Channel:
"We just announced the launch of an HD network, and we have several new series and specials on the agenda, so I plan to be working on Labor Day."
Patrick Scott, president, The Weather Channel Networks:
"[I'm] not laboring, I trust--unless there happens to be a hurricane in the offing. I'll be barbecuing and pulling a few corks 'round the pool."
Patrick Younge, EVP/GM, Travel Channel:
"This is my first Labor Day in the States [since moving from England]. As part of my ongoing efforts to immerse myself in American culture, I'll be attending an authentic Virginia barbecue at my PR guy's house."
