Hardship a part of life

OB/GYN News,  Oct 15, 2003  by David M. Hayes

Appropriately enough, an academic from Harvard Medical School speaking in Canada indicted health care financing in the United States because people have bankruptcies related to medical costs ("Survey: Medical Issues at Root of 55% of All Personal Bankruptcies in the U.S.," July 15, 2003, p. 32).

What's the big deal? Illness, earthquakes, divorces, fires, tidal waves, hurricanes, loss of employment, and drought have been and always will be part of life and will cause severe hardship--and yes, bankruptcy. Dr. Steffie J. Woolhandler and her cohorts are free to start whatever relief organization they would like to solve any one of these problems. Uncertainty and adversity are part of life. As a former filer of bankruptcy, I accept the lessons that I learned, including the uncertainty and vicissitudes of life and the need to plan for such.
