China's Beijing airport reportedly plans to add new gates and improve its runways.

Beijing Capital International Airport can currently handle 35 million passengers a year and in 2004 its total number of annual travellers passed 30 million. According to Wang Jiadong, the airport's general manager, the number should increase by another 5 million this year and therefore upgrading is necessary, reported the Xinhua News Agency.

The airport plans to add 67 spaces for parking aircraft, at least 10 boarding gates and 32 reception counters, as well as upgrading the runways. The estimated cost of the upgrade is CNY1.2bn.
