A charter aircraft owned by Mediterranean Airlines crashed in Turkey yesterday (26 May), killing all 75 people on board.
The Ukrainian aircraft, a Yak-42, reportedly crashed into a mountain in thick fog near the northeastern town of Macka where it was to stop to refuel. The aircraft had requested permission to land at Trabzon but lost contact when it was southwest of the airport.
According to investigators the aircraft split into two pieces following the crash, which initial examinations show was caused by dense fog in the area.
The flight - which had departed from Afghanistan for Spain - had been carrying 62 Spanish peacekeepers and 13 Ukrainian crew members, reported Reuters.
