Investigation into air fares under way in the US
AIRLINE INDUSTRY INFORMATION-(C)1997-2002 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD
The US Transportation Department is currently investigating whether airline passengers should pay more to travel to the most popular airports at the most popular times.
The investigation began last August, but was suspended following the 11 September terrorist attacks. The department is looking into charging airlines more to land during peak travel times; auctioning takeoff and landing slots at crowed airports; raising prices at overcrowded airports to encourage airlines to divert service to nearby less-used facilities; and limiting flights at some airports.
The department will collect comments from the airline industry and passengers until 22 July 2002, reported The Associated Press.
