MessageLabs issues warning of new phishing technique aimed at acquiring online banking details

Internet Business News,  Nov 3, 2004

INTERNET BUSINESS NEWS-(C)1995-2004 M2 COMMUNICATIONS LTD

MessageLabs, a provider of managed e-mail security services, has identified a new phishing technique designed to capture online banking details without requiring users to click on a website link.

According to MessageLabs all users have to do to reveal the information, through the new technique, is to open an e-mail.

The company said that it has intercepted a number of e-mails, which silently run a script that attempts to rewrite the host files of targeted machines when they are opened. This means that the next time the user attempts to legitimately access online banking the attempt will automatically be redirected to a fraudulent website that allows the log-in details to be stolen, MessageLabs said.
