Research carried out by credit card company Visa Europe and Dr Cynthia McVey, psychologist at Glasgow University, shows that one in five people do not shop over the Internet due to security fears.

Over 20% of Internet users interviewed said that they had never made a purchase online with 69% of those who do shop online wanting e-tailers to do more to make them feel secure. Half of those who hadn't shopped online said it was because they feared they would become the victim of fraud if they gave their credit card details over the Internet.

Visa Europe released the results of the study as it launched to consumers its online payment card protection system, Verified by Visa - a password protection system that proves and guarantees the cardholder's identity.
