Boeing Signs New European Airline

Communications Today,  Nov 22, 2002

Boeing's [BA] Connexion by Boeing unit has signed a memorandum of understanding with Denmark's Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) that will lead to installation of Boeing's satellite-based airborne broadband service offering in SAS planes. SAS will install the Connexion by Boeing system in 11 long-haul aircraft as the first stage of a planned larger rollout, with commercial service is planned for 2004. The technology provides multiple high-bandwidth data streams into an aircraft in flight, allowing both passenger broadband connections and beaming of entertainment content directly to the aircraft. Boeing has worked primarily with European airlines to deploy the system on transatlantic flights since the implosion of the U.S. airline industry following the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001. British Airways [BAB], Lufthansa [DLAKY] and Japan Airlines [JASJF] have also signed on as customers.
