Ask the trainer
Shape, March, 2005
Q Is an elliptical trainer as effective as running on a treadmill?
A Yes, if you are exercising at the same pace on both machines. "It's all about intensity," says Ray Browning, M.S., an exercise scientist at the University of Colorado in Boulder. There is no difference in calorie burn between machines as long as your heart rate remains the same, he says. However, you may want to measure your intensity using a heart-rate monitor, rather than the Rate of Perceived Exertion when using an elliptical trainer. According to a June 2004 study at Ithaca College in New York, the localized leg burn you feel when using the elliptical trainer can trick you into feeling like you are exercising at a higher intensity than you actually are.--L.L.
