The art of setting goals
Shape, Jan, 2005 by Winnie Yu
Want a healthier lifestyle? New friends? Cleaner closets? Setting the right goal can help you get there if you're passionate about what you want and understand why you want it, says Charles Stuart Platkin, author of Breaking the Pattern (Red Mill Press, 2002). Start by writing down a goal that's specific and realistic, then devise a plan that covers tactics for overcoming obstacles. To keep yourself motivated, include short-term goals that are within reach.
Following are three aspirations with goal-setting tips from Platkin, Jennifer Webb and Sally Franz, co-authors of Monster Lies: A Woman's Guide to Controlling Her Destiny (Beagle Bay Books, 2002):
* Goal Exercise three times a week
Success tip Pick activities you enjoy, even love. Schedule them on your calendar like any other commitment.
* Goal Eat more vegetables
Success tip Find recipes that include your favorite veggies and add one or two new dishes to your diet each week.
* Goal Save more money
Success tip Visualize how you'll spend the money, then plot out specific ways to save, such as setting up an automatic withdrawal plan or clipping coupons.
