Pesticisides linked to preemies
Vegetarian Times, Oct, 2007 by Brandy Colbert
The number of premature births is on the rise, accounting for about 10 percent of all pregnancies. Now an Indiana University School of Medicine study suggests that more widespread use of pesticides and fertilizers may be to blame. Tracking more than 27 million live births between 1996 and 2002, researchers found the highest rate of prematurity occurring in May and June--just when pesticides and nitrates in surface water are at their peaks.
While the jury's still out on the exact link between pesticides and premature birth rates, moms-to-be might want to consider eating organic foods and pesticide-free gardening.
