Sharing the wealth

Vegetarian Times,  May-June, 2007  by Mary Margaret Chappell

Why do you like to cook?

I'm asked this question over and over, by close friends, family members (my mom is no fan of the stove) and cocktail party acquaintances. My answer is pretty simple and always the same: I like to cook because I like to share.

Oh sure, there are the personal pleasures that come with cooking, like the sheer bliss of tasting and buying the season's first strawberries at a farmers' market. Or the creative satisfaction that comes from making a dish that is truly delicious. But even though I could eat that whole quart of berries by myself, it isn't nearly as much fun as putting them into strawberry shortcakes for friends. And I live for those dinner-party moments when guests are robbed of speech by food that has delighted them.

I bring this up because this issue is chock-full of people sharing their passions and discoveries. There's Brandy Colbert, VT's reunion-bound associate editor who came up with the idea for "Family," p. 66, to help introduce her family to veg options at the buffet table. There's Dr. Neal Barnard, our Ask the Doc physician who passed along his insights and expertise so we could help him get the word out about his diabetes-reversing diet ("Slim, Trim + Vegan," p. 72).

And finally, there's "Wildman" Steve Brill, an enthusiastic forager who tells you how to find three edible plants right in your own backyard ("Sink Your Teeth into Foraging," p. 58). I took one of Steve's foraging tours in Central Park a couple of years ago and can attest to his generosity: In addition to showing us every imaginable comestible growing in the park, he brought along a thermos of homemade vegan ice cream for the group to taste. Turns out, Steve loves to cook, too--and like me, he couldn't help but share.
